The power of goal setting

January 18, 20233 min read

If you’re a small business owner, you don’t have to be told twice that you wear multiple hats all at once. It can get to be a lot, balancing all of the things you do on a daily basis. Maybe you’re a CEO, but also running the day-to-day of your business. On top of that, maybe you’re also an attorney running your firm, driving your team, and practicing law. How can you possibly make it all work?

Enter goal setting. But how can you effectively set goals to improve your life as well as the lives of your employees? By including these few elements in your goals, you can set goals that are powerful and effective for your business.

Team Morale and Unity

Your goals should go toward improving your team’s morale and unity. How do you do this? Work toward goals that make your employees’ jobs easier.

People just want to feel heard at the end of the day, and your employees are no different. When you’re able to listen to things that they need and want, you build loyalty far beyond just a job. These kinds of goals speak volumes to your employees and do wonders for your team morale and unity.

Team morale matters. It affects your entire business. A united team with good morale simply works better together and puts out a better final product. It’s worth taking the time to invest in goals that build this element of your business.

Set Goals with Clear Expectations

The goals you set should have clear expectations. When it comes to goals, no one benefits from ambiguity. Giving both your team and yourself clear expectations will result in more powerful and effective goals.

In addition to your goals being stronger, clear expectations will increase performance. People are more likely to rise to your expectations when those expectations are clear.

Big Picture Goals

When you create goals for your firm, they should motivate you to rise above the small details. No doubt that those details are important. However, your firm will never grow and progress if you, as the owner, aren’t able to rise above the details.

Your goals should challenge you to look at the big picture. Work on your firm, not just in it. What are the things you’d like to see the firm achieve? Where would you like to be in 5 years? How are you going to get there? Your job as the owner is to have this vision and create goals that will help your business get there.

A practical way to help you get there is to know when to outsource. Like we mentioned before, sometimes it can feel impossible to balance all the hats that business owners have to wear. We get it. That’s why it’s important to outsource when you can.

Ask yourself: “What is my genius?” In other words, what are the things that you, and only you, can do for your business. Those are the things you would not outsource, of course. Then, look at everything else that needs to be done. How much of that list can be outsourced to a company that exists to help you? You’ll be more likely to accomplish the goals you set when you have more time to focus on them.

Here at iCopy, we exist to do just that. Whether you already know the best areas to outsource for efficiency and improvement or need help figuring out. We come along side to understand your processes and maximize efficiency.
